Disadvantages and risks of having Google Redirect virus:
- It may change & corrupt default settings of browsers like Firefox, Chrome or Internet explorer
- Changes home page and displays unwanted pop-ups advertisements
- Causes frequent web redirects to wrong websites, hijacks search engine settings and leads to unexpected webpages
- Keeps record of browsing activities and interests
- Collects Personal user information which may include sensitive financial data such as logins, usernames, accounts
- It may bring further infections are direct the user to infectious sites
- Makes the browser run slow, uses a big part of system resources
To remove Google Redirect virus manually, follow the instructions.
NOTE: In the tutorial below, Consider the “Google redirect virus” as the most common website name which you get redirected to. AND, in the Browser settings, Consider the “Google redirect virus” as any plugin/extension or toolbar which you think is suspicious.
First of all, Uninstall the program. (Skip to the next step if the application is not listed in Control Panel).
“Start > Settings > Control Panel. Now Locate and open “Add or Remove Programs” or “PROGRAMS AND FEATURES”. Find “Google Redirect virus”. Now click Uninstall/Remove.
Now remove the program from Browser.
Internet Explorer users:
Click “Tools” (if on Internet Explorer 9, click gear icon), Then “Manage Add-ons”. Look for Google Redirect virus. Disable if found any.
Block pop-ups of Google Redirect virus
To stop pop-ups from malware,
Click on TOOLS > POP-UP BLOCKER, then click TURN ON POP-UP BLOCKER. and then go to POP-UP BLOCKER SETTINGS. (Type any website you wish to block popups from)
Modifying DNS settings. Edit HOSTS File
Most browser hijackers do change your DNS settings by modifying HOSTS file. You may possible fix a redirect virus by restoring/editing this file to default settings.
1: Go to My computer and open the drive in which windows is installed. (default is “C:\”)
2: Now open WINDOWS folder, find and open SYSTEM 32 and then DRIVER and then ETC.
3: In the ETC folder, find the file named HOSTS and open it with NOTEPAD. Make sure this file looks like the image below. If it contains any other text, just remove the text and SAVE the file by clicking MENU and then SAVE.
